Publicity Queen was started in April 2002 by Sally Romano as a specialist PR firm to service the ‘small business’ sector - that is, companies with turnover of up to $50 million.

Having worked as a PR consultant and then as a senior marketing manager within the SME sector, she saw an enormous service gap for small and medium enterprises requiring publicity.

Market research confirmed that there were several hundred PR consultancies in Australia, however, the service capability for an SME was less than ideal because...

  1. The vast majority of PR ‘consultancies’ in Australia are solopreneurs who have set up an office to service whatever business they can manage single-handedly. This can work well but does not offer the depth of expertise which SMEs require to grow.
  2. There are a few mid-tier PR agencies with 5-plus consultants, but commonly at this point, these firms lose interest in servicing small business and move into the corporate sector seeking lucrative big-brand accounts with big-brand budgets.
  3. The third PR agency model is that of the large national and multinational consultancy, but generally they won’t deal with SMEs because their operational infrastructure is geared towards servicing corporate accounts such as Coca-Cola, Nike, McDonalds and the like.

Until Publicity Queen, there was no PR agency with any breadth of expertise that was focusing solely on servicing start-up, right through to medium-sized companies.

And that is exactly why Publicity Queen was established – to offer SMEs a specialist Public Relations Agency that has the resources and expertise to assist entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
